Uganda has nominated veteran diplomat Ambassador Olara Otunnu for United Nations Secretary-General, a position to be filled as current Secretary-General António Guterres' term ends December 31. Otunnu has more than four decades of experience in international diplomacy and previously served as the UN's first Under-Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict from 1998 to 2005.

French authorities said more than 220,000 people have been evacuated from a major forest fire in the southwest, which has burned 42,000 hectares and forced closures of highways and rail lines.
