Women dairy farmers locked out by collateral and land ownership barriers

The News

A new Kenya National Women in Dairy Report 2026 shows that 65 per cent of women dairy farmers identify lack of collateral as the biggest obstacle to accessing credit, with only 23 per cent owning titled land and 19 per cent having documented ownership of cattle. The report, commissioned by the Kenya National Farmers' Federation and covering five leading dairy counties, finds that conventional lending requirements exclude women despite their strong repayment records and growing contribution to the dairy economy.
