Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye launched a new party called Kiiraay on Saturday, following his falling out with ex-prime minister Ousmane Sonko. Faye, who was swept into office in 2024 by Sonko's Pastef party, appointed Sonko prime minister but sacked him in May after their relationship soured.

Uganda has nominated veteran diplomat Ambassador Olara Otunnu for United Nations Secretary-General, a position to be filled as current Secretary-General António Guterres' term ends December 31. Otunnu has more than four decades of experience in international diplomacy and previously served as the UN's first Under-Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict from 1998 to 2005.
