Kenya has signed a tripartite agreement to develop a Sh12 billion Special Economic Zone in Mombasa's first phase expected to create 10,000 jobs and transform the coastal city into a manufacturing and export hub. The 535-acre project is designed to attract industries in manufacturing, processing, assembly and value addition to shift Kenya towards an export-oriented economy.

President William Ruto has challenged developers of the Mombasa Special Economic Zone to move beyond agreements to building factories, creating jobs, and producing goods. Ruto said the zone must help Kenya stop exporting raw materials and importing finished products at higher prices, and described the zone as a step towards transforming Mombasa into a manufacturing, processing and logistics hub.

About 99,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser have arrived at Mombasa port for smallholder tea farmers, expected to benefit around 800,000 farmers across the country. The consignment is the first of three shipments arriving this month and will be transported via the Standard Gauge Railway to Nairobi before distribution to tea factories and farmers.
